With women, it is essential to wipe front to back. This will reduce the possibility of bringing bacteria from the back to the front where it will multiply and cause a urinary tract infection.

Another cause is wearing unclean undergarments or tight fitting undergarments. These are ideal breeding grounds for bacteria. Which can quickly turn into a urinary tract infection.

Holding in urine causes the bladder to stretch which makes it susceptible to bacteria growth and a urinary tract infection could very well be the outcome.

Urine is supposed to be sterile, which means it is free from bacteria. However, bacteria can be found in urine if there is a urinary tract infection. Unfortunately, waste and salts are also found in urine even if there isn't an infection present.

In some cases the bacteria is left behind after the digestion process and urination. The tiny bacteria cling on to the lining and multiply very fast causing a urinary tract infection.

What can you do to reduce your chances of having a urinary tract infection? First, make sure you cleanse yourself after intercourse and after bowel movements. This will greatly reduce the possibility the bacteria will multiply and lead to a urinary tract infection.

Cat had a urinary tract infection and now pees everywhere?

  • Juliananananana asked on Sun, 28 Mar, 2010
My six month old cat recently developed a urinary tract infection and we brought him to the vet and he is now on a special medicine and diet. Ever since then, though, he has been peeing everywhere (on clothes, beds, even in our bath tub) as if he was never litter box trained! Does anyone know why this is or what we should do?
  • sheidu5 replied on Sun, 28 Mar, 2010
It is letting you know that something isn't right. If the med. doesn't help him or her within a couple days, get it back to the vet. It can kill a cat.
  • claire cool replied on Sun, 28 Mar, 2010
its not his fault that he pees just block him of in a room till he is better
  • victoria replied on Sun, 28 Mar, 2010
that is the first sign of a urinary tract infection . call the vet and ask how long it should be doing that . the meds might not be working
  • Shadow replied on Sun, 28 Mar, 2010
Either he is still experiencing pain or these places still smell like urine. Get an enzymatic cleaner to clean the places where he goes so that it doesn't still smell like an appropriate place to pee. Also call your vet tomorrow, phone calls are free and it wont hurt anything, ask if this behavior should still be continuing. It is possible that he needs a different dosage or medicine. Remember not all antibiotics fight all infections. Of course, do not stop giving any medicine without your vet's knowledge as it can prolong or inhibit the healing or create antibiotic resistant bacteria. It could also be that you haven't given the medication enough time to work. You didn't say how long ago he was put on it.

He is letting you know something isn't right. He was litter trained before, and now he is trying to let you know he is still sick. Can you lock him in a room so he does not soil everything you own? Also talk to the vet. Maybe he needs a change in the meds, depending on how long he has been on them.

He might still be in pain and you should take him to the vet asap. If he's actually better, then he probably needs to be retrained to use the litter box. He has associated the pain of the urinary tract infection with the litter box. Monitor him so if you see he starts scratching through your clothes or your bed sheets (like he would do with the litter) it means he's going probably going to pee. Clap your hands or something to make him stop. Then take him to the litter box. If he's good and uses it, give him a treat. Just be patient. And don't get angry at him, it's not his fault. Remember also to keep the litter box clean My kitty also got an UTI and was peeing on my bed. Now she's doing just fine :)
